History and Philosophy of Physics Committee of the AAPT

Tuesday January 14, 2003 7:00 pm

Austin TX

1. Chair Frieda Stahl called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm, and members present introduced themselves.

Members Present:

Frieda Stahl , Zoltan Berkes, Tom Greenslade, Jamie Day, Roger Stuewer, David Tanenbaum, Myra West, Mark Lattery

Guests Present:

Francis Tam, Anthony French, Steve Hoffmaster, Ronald A. Schon, Daniel O'Brien, Charlie Holbrow, John Hubisz, Len Jossem

Members absent:

John Roeder, Alexander K. Dickison, Sanjoy Mahajan, Howard G. Voss

2. Frieda asked Mark to take notes on our committee's discussion of the Meeting Themes. David agreed to take minutes of the meeting.

3. Announcements.

2005 Will be the 100 th year anniversary of Einstein's 3 papers on Relativity, Brownian Motion, and the Photoelectric Effect. We discussed planning a special session possibly with invited papers, or even a Plenary Speaker.

John Rigden has two sessions focused on senior physicists. This has no formal tie to the History and Philosophy Committee.

4. Madison is the next summer meeting site with the theme Form and Function. We discussed having a field trip to Yerkes Observatory.

We agreed to put in a call for papers, and determined that we should do this for every national meeting as matter of course. We agreed to try and emphasize philosophy, since we are usually history rich and philosophy poor.

1 st Invited Session –Retrospectives: March, Osterbrock, Haeberli

2 nd Invited Session – Distinguished Wisconsin Faculty

Plenary Session: David Lindberg on Ancient Physics History (can we get the Plenary? Would he do it if it were not?)

We talked about Ben Shoemaker as a possible Plenary for Miami – on Qubits.

5. Minutes from Boise were approved with one spelling correction on “Haeberli”

6. We talked about building connections between AAPT and the world. We concluded that Bill Evenson would be a natural liaison between the APS History Committee and our AAPT committee.

7. We discussed meeting themes for the National Meetings. We suggested Oceanography and Atmospheric Science for Florida. For Sacramento we discussed doing Earth Sciences taking advantage of Livermore

8. We discussed the papers at this meeting. We also discussed that Mark Lattery and Sanjoy Mahajan did a workshop at the Boise meeting that was successful, and that they will do one for the Madison meeting on Thought Experiments in Physics Education.

9. We discussed our membership. Tom Greenslade, Zoltan Berkes, and Bill Ingham are leaving the committee. Incoming members are Ms. Luziter, Mr. Mahajan, and Mr. Evenson. Next year, Myra West, and David Tanenbaum will be leaving. We discussed ideas for those replacements, including B. Oldaker, and S. Hoffmaster. There was a concern about getting gender equity onto the committee as well.

10. We discussed Miami some more. We will have one general call, and also a call with an emphasis on Applications to the Classroom.

The meeting closed about 8:30 pm.
